Henry Lamer and The National Confusion
Hi everyone! yes.. i am 20 years and 2 days old. yeah.. and i failed my one new year resolution already. haiz.. i did not manage to come up with my own hip hop dance routine.. =( haiz.. sucks. and i haven been practicing for a loooooooong time.. haiz..
i really wan to dance again..
Anyway, i realise that a lot of people(other than guys), have misconceptions regarding national service. So i tot it would be good if i try and clarify some of them here.
National service, is basically, from my point of view, a form of work, that is mandatory for all boys of singapore citizenship.
MISCONCEPTION #1: National service, DOES NOT mean army.
Meaning, if a guy is required to go serve his country, he doesn't have to go to the army only. All boys, will either be sent to the army, the police force, the civil defence force or the diver unit(Navy).
Army deals with external issues, and is under the ministry of defence. Meaning, boys going to army learn to fight in wars, or any other things related to war, including things like drawing maps, looking after missiles and things like that.
The Police deals with internal affairs(not the hit hong kong movie, but related) and is under the ministry of home affairs. Meaning, boys are trained to handle weapons to deal with criminals, riots etc.
The Civil Defence Force also deals with internal affairs and is under the ministry of home affairs. Boys sent to civil defence learnt to fight fires as a firefighter or attend medical emergencies as part of an ambulance crew.
The Diver unit, basically deals with underwater warfare(duh!) and i think is also under the ministry of defence. So is like the water version of army.
But of course, i am juz talking about the main difference between the different type of NS a guy can have. Definitely, there will be different vocations in the different forces, which i am going to discuss now.
Before a guy gets enlist, they will have to go for a full body check up on their health condition. Upon checking, they will be issued a PES status, which will decide which phase of training they will go through. The healthiest would be PES A, all the way to PES E. This means, that not every guy that goes to NS will have to face physically demanding training.
MISCONCEPTION #2: NS not equals to becoming very fit and muscular.
"Ok henry, if that is the case, what kind of non physical things do boys get to do in NS?" Well, boys may be allocated to vocations such as clerks, storeman, technician, general duties, canteen boy etc. There are all kind of jobs in NS, why would the government want to leave anyone out of something so fun like NS?
and because of the nature of these vocations, not everyone will stay in camp everyday.
MISCONCEPTION #3: NS does not mean must stay in camp EVERYDAY!
Usually, guys only have to stay in camp everyday when they are in their training phase. Once they are done, they may be sent to different camps and may get to work in shifts or office hours. For example, right now, i am serving as a medical instructor. I teach public, reservist and other trainees medical stuff. Therefore, i get to work office hours. Whereas some of my friends who work in fire stations, work in shifts, from 8am to 8pm, den rest one day etc.
Unlike the past, where boys have to serve longer for NS, now, an average NS guy serve about 2 years. But..
MISCONCEPTION #4: All boys must serve 2 years of NS.
There are cases where people serve less or more. For example, if a guy, before he gets enlisted, managed to get a silver or gold for his NAPFA test, he gets to serve 2 months less, like me! There are also others, who chooses to disobey rules in NS, and gets sent to dentention barracks, which is kinda like a NS jail. So, if lets say he gets sent inside for 30 days, then, he has to serve an extra 30 days of NS. Yup.. so the length of ur NS depends or the guy himself.
Ok, i think that would be all when it comes to NS. Feel free to drop me any questions if u are confused about something. I'll try my best to answer. If not, see u again in the next tale of Henry Lamer!
